Join the Louisville Area Skeptics, the Lexington Society for Skeptical Inquiry, the Cin City Skeptics, and the Ashland, Ky, Freethinkers for this FREE Science and Skepticism Conference, SkeptiCamp Kentucky 2011!

Welcome to the Wiki Page. Here you can register free for the event, volunteer to give a talk, and get information on everything that will happen at our first-ever SkeptiCamp. Contact us at skepticampky@gmail.com if you have any questions.

SkeptiCamps are informal, community-organized conferences borne from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. Everyone from casual skeptics to the experienced participate, give talks and get to know each other. The first-ever SkeptiCamp Kentucky will be held on Saturday, June 25, at the downtown main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library.

This will be an open conference (not a kids' summer camp) with talks about topics of interest to skeptics and critical thinkers. See below for the current list of registered talks, and to sign up to give a talk. Where traditional conferences rely on registration fees paid by attendees, at SkeptiCamp you instead ‘pay’ through your active participation. We encourage everyone, from the newbie to the seasoned skeptic, to offer a short talk on a topic that drives your passion for science or skepticism. While giving a talk is optional, we nevertheless ask that you participate by engaging with the speakers and your fellow attendees.

edit What needs to be done?

These are collaborative, community-organized events. We need many people involved to make this event happen, such as to offer talks, to help recruit good speakers, to man the registration table and especially to help promote the event.

edit How you can help

You can volunteer for tasks by emailing us at skepticampky@gmail.com.

At the very least please promote your participation on your social media networks (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)

edit Room layout and A/V setup

The Centennial Room is located on the lower level next to the elevators in the new wing. There is seating for over 100, a raised dais, ceiling mounted LCD projector, a nice PA with 3 microphones, a lectern, a speaker's table and a small kitchen. Speakers should bring their own laptop if they will be using one. If using a Mac, iPad or similar device make sure you bring your VGA adapter! We will have a laptop available for those that need it. In that case you should save your presentation to an external drive. To ensure that your presentation will look the way you expect you are advised to save your PowerPoint presentation as a PowerPoint Show, or your Keynote presentation as a Quicktime file. Please contact us at skepticampky@gmail.com if you have any other questions or specific needs.

edit Planning Notes

Last Minute Thoughts
Bring yourself a brown bag lunch, and enjoy The Critical Eye podcast during the lunch break.
We will provide water and light refreshments during the event. Free will donations accepted.
Unfortunately the library does not allow us to serve coffee or other beverages, to protect the carpeting.
We will have door prizes! (You must be present to win.)
You may come or go at any time, but please respect the presenters by moving quietly.
There will be short breaks between each presenter to allow attendees to get up and stretch, etc.

Please RSVP through the LAS meetup to come to the After Party at the BBC (4th and Broadway) at 5:00pm. You can park there in garage behind the Brown, then walk to Skepticamp at the library if you want. http://www.meetup.com/Louisville-Area-Skeptics/events/19829911/

edit Suggestions/feedback for next time

Supplies
Bring pens, lots of pens.
Bring sweaters or space heaters. :)

Schedule
Need social time, 15 minute breaks and/or lunch free to visit.

Snacks
Open it up as a pot-luck, just for snacks, or even for lunch?

Planning
Make surveys for everyone to give feedback.

Registration/Check-In
Have people register by sending an email to the gmail account, rather than editing the wiki themselves. Several people had problems and couldn't edit the wiki, and we had no way to contact the people who registered on the wiki. Once they send the email to register, that allows us to have their email address so we can send out announcements and reminders.
List all the jobs that are available on the wiki, including how many speaker spots are available, slots to help with food, slots to help with registration, slots to help with a/v, slots to help with brochures, slots to help with set-up, etc.
Have two people dedicated to the check-in table all day.
Make multiple sign-in sheets to speed up sign-in.
