SkeptiCamps are open, participatory events that focus on distributing knowledge within communities of skeptics. We encourage each attendee offer a short talk on a topic related to science or skepticism, but giving a talk is not required to participate. At the very least we ask that everyone be actively engaged, asking questions during the talks.
For an introduction to these newfangled open events, see Reed's recent article Top 7 Reasons Why SkeptiCamp Sucks

edit Colorado leads the way!

Skepticamp started in Colorado and has succeeded largely due to the herculean efforts of Reed Esau. Reed's innovation was that people with a skeptical or scientific outlook would get together and, as a community, share what they know about subjects of mutual interest. The innovation of open events in skepticism started at the Tivoli in Denver with the first experimental SkeptiCamp in 2007. Now coming upon our sixth event in the Metro Area, we build on past events in Denver, Castle Rock and Boulder. There have also been Skepticamps in Colorado Springs and Fort Collins!

These events have reached far from Colorado, with events all over the North America, Europe, and Australia (History of events).

edit Where and when is the event?

Our previous venues for the metro area have been Denver, Castle Rock, Denver (again), and Boulder (twice). This year we return to the south metro area, and will host the first ever skeptical open event in beautiful Parker, Colorado.

SkeptiCamp Colorado 2010

Where: Parker Public Library, 10851 S Crossroads Dr Parker,Colorado 80134. Large Meeting Room

When: May 5, 2012. 9:20 a.m. to 4:40 p.m.

edit Register to attend!

This is the official signup page for this event. There is no cost to attend.

All you need to do to register to attend is to edit this wiki page and insert your name into the list of registered participants. We will allow for 70 people to register. If you are higher than number 70, please consider yourself on a waiting list, but please come anyway. We have had waiting lists in the past and there have always been no-shows on the date of the event, and no person on the waiting list has ever been turned away. If you don't feel comfortable editing a wiki page in order to register (it is really easy, though), please send an email to richorman@q.com and you will be added in.

To add your name (individuals only please!) click the 'edit' link to the right and add yourself to the END of the list. No need to create an account!

  69. End Of List--At Capacity

edit "Over Capacity List"

This the "over capacity list" We have a set limit on the number of people in the room (per the fire marshal). We usually have about a 15 percent no-show rate, and we have always had room for people on the over capacity list. Still, we have to have an upper limit on our main list. We have never turned anyone away from a Skepticamp event, so please put your name on the list below and come!.

edit What needs to be done?

These are collaborative, community-organized events. We need many people involved to make this event happen, such as to offer talks, to help recruit good speakers, to man the registration table and especially to help promote the event.

edit Participate by giving a talk

The talks are what Skepticamp is all about! Think of a topic that will be of interest to your fellow skeptics, research it, prepare it, and voila, you have your talk! Previous topics have involved so-called "ghost hunters," pseudo-astronomy, pseudo-science, pseudo-history, linguistics, geology, theater superstitions, "free" energy, and much much more.

As SkeptiCamp is about sharing knowledge, we strongly encourage each participant to offer a short talk on a topic related to science or skepticism (though giving a talk is not required to participate.)

edit Scheduling policies and guidelines

Talks will be either 12 minutes with 3 minutes between talks or 25 minutes with five minutes between. The organizational committee can agree to longer times, if necessary, but only if there is more time available than there are people that want to speak. As is tradition, Rocky Mountain Paranormal will have approximately one hour after lunch, subject to change. If there are more people that want to give presentations than there is time allowed, the organizational committee may ask speakers to volunteer to take shorter times, and if there are not any volunteers the organizational committee may shorten all participants' speaking time to make room for more speakers, but this is within the discretion of the organizational committee.

This year we will be having a LIGHTNING ROUND (or rounds if enough people sign up) which will be structured as follows: 1.)Each person that signs up for the lightning round will have 5 minutes to give a talk on a topic of their choice. 2.)There will be no question or answer session following the 5 minute talk. 3.)Each presenter for the lightening round must have their presentation to the organizational community by April 21st so that the material can be pre-loaded onto a computer to decrease preparation time between lightning round talks. 4.)There will be a vote by the Skepticamp participants deciding who's talk was the most convincing or informative. 5.)Scheduling of the lightning round will be first given to those who are not giving a 15 minute or 30 minute talk.

First-time speakers are STRONGLY encouraged to get their feet wet with one of the shorter talks, but this is not a hard and fast requirement.

We will have AV equipment that should be able to project any powerpoint or PDF presentation you want to present. We encourage all participants to put any presentation into both a powerpoint (or open office) format AND pdf format as well.

We now have a schedule figured out for Skepticamp 2012. We have listed it below. This schedule is not written in stone, and may have to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances. Please note that the schedule is full (as of 4/24/12). Last year we had a couple of speakers who failed to show up, so you can still sign up as an alternate speaker, and there is a good chance that you might get to speak.

  • Thank you so much to the organizers for this wonderful and educational experience!
  • Regarding the presentation wherein the denier of the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change, I will debunk and refute every single one of the 30+ (I stopped counting at 30) asinine, false, idiotic, insulting and absurd assertions make by this presenter on my DESERTPHILE YouTube channel: please stay tune there.
